Shahrukh Khan

Aamir Khan

does not inhabit the realm of pure fantasy,
leading to the kind of wishful thinking out
loud on the part of gay men who want to sleep with, say,
Sanjay Dutt or Salman Khan
and
so pronounce them gay in the hope
they will magically transform into gay men.
Shah Rukh
is well-known as having much truck
with gayness (pun intended),
whether it was the affair for years with the producer/bit actor
who gave him all his early breaks and
who can't be named (but everyone who knows, knows)
or the more famous director now who can be named
— Karan Johar —
because both he and Shah Rukh flirt openly
with the popular conception of them as lovers.
In Koffee With Karan (KWK),
on TV, Karan asked Shah Rukh how
he would feel if he woke up and realised
he was Karan and Shah Rukh retorted that going
by media reports it was more likely that he would
wake up with him in bed rather than as him.
Everyone titters nervously at this yet no one dares
ask any real questions because homosexuality is that
sort of thing in India,
you don't really ever talk about it
(and if you do, you might get beaten up by macho men
— remember Saif and Ashok Row Kavi?).
Shah Rukh got on stage at the awards ceremony
in a towel with Saif,
in a parody of the new gay icon,
Ranbir,
in that deeply forgettable film.
On screen,
he's fooled around with gayness
in jokes that went on for too long like the bai one
in Kal Ho Na Ho (KHNH),
insulted gay men
(Vivek Vaswani in Kabhi Han Kabhi Na)
and basked in dense Indian cinematic homoeroticism
in too many films to recount with too many heroes to remember.
But
no one seems to move beyond
the incredulous when it comes to his sexuality:
"Really? No!"
Or
"But what about Gauri?"
Or
"What rubbish! Doesn't he have children?"
Well, darlings,
practically every gay man in India is married,
thousands of them have children and
that does not mean a thing.
They love their d**k or a*s on the side
and they go out and get it.
Try any of the Internet chat rooms in the country
and you'll discover that more that 50 per cent
of the guys there are married.
Gayness may be their identity, marriage
is the necessary social obligation, the facade.
Why should Shah Rukh be any different?
So, there are two levels to this issue:
a) Is Shah Rukh giving or getting it? b) Is Shah rukh a gay icon?
To the first, the answer is:
Totally. Take it from me.
Is he a top or a bottom?
We do know he has a great a*s and he knows it too.
But
we do know he tends to like femme men
(I mean, c'mon, guys, the screamiest queen in town is Karan)
so he's most probably a top.
But really,
do we want to go any further?
Isn't Shah Rukh ugly enough for us to want
to imagine him naked in bed with Karan,
who is even uglier?
కార్_వరంగల్@యాహూ.com
Shah Rukh does not have the guts to ever come
out himself and say he likes d**k or a*s and always has
the family man image, patriarchy and the number
one straight man image to fall back on whenever he desires.
Shah Rukh: Sabse Rocking Khan is MTV youth icon
When it comes to box office charisma, SRK wins. Not surprisingly, Khan has been voted as MTV’s youth icon of the year.
10 June, 2005: The Bollywood superstar beat Azim Premji, Sania Mirza, Sonia Gandhi, Irfan Pathan and Sonu Nigam to emerge as the favourite of Generation X from ten Indian cities: Ahmedabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.
The age-mix of the sample voters say it all: 15-24.
So what exactly makes this man with a Masters in Mass Communication from Jamiya Miliya Islamiya, New Delhi, click? Bubbly enthusiasm, raw energy, cheerful presence or a mix of all these? Only time will answer that. One thing is certain, this son of a freedom fighter has been the biggest presence in Bollywood screen since Amitabh. When we say biggest presence, it doesn’t count stars like Aamir Khan who makes a once-in-a-blue moon presence and wins all laurels in and out of box office.
Shah Rukh is a bigger star and acceptable to a wider mass because he also loses. Like the boy next door. Like you and like people whom you spot in your every day life. You also need to lose at times to win. SRK does exactly that.
That may be exactly why he took up Mass Communication (Film making ). He was prepared to lose, rather than shying away without a try. And that is what connects SRK with the MTV generation of go-getters.
Remember, last year it was Rahul Dravid and before that in 2003 it was Anil Ambani who were voted youth icons.
Shah Rukh’s career as an actor started on the idiot box with Dil Dairya dircted by Lekha Tandon. But Fauji catapulted him to spotlight. And glory. Attention came with Bazigaar. And accolades with Darr. Then there was stardom. Thus the enlightened celebrity with the brand name SRK was born.
So the chirpy SRK, who is a chain smoker but has come out in a slightly-tight lipped backing of ban on smoking on screen, is now focused on his next release: Amol Palekar’s Paheli, produced by SRK himself with the husky Rani Mukherjee in tow on screen. SRK plays a double role.
So it’s a sort of re-invention for the Bollywood superstar, after Swadesh bombed. Khan is also working on a remake of Amitabh’s Don, being directed by Farhan Akhtar. While Amitabh’s role goes naturally to SRK, Akshay Kumar takes over the mantle from Pran and Priyanka Chopra would hopefully give Zeenat Aman a run for her clothes (or lack of it). Then there is a project with Khan’s all time favourite Karan Johar, with Abhishek , Preity and Rani, slated for next year.
So Shah Rukh’s present fixation is his soon-to-be-released memoirs `20 years Of A Decade’.
